Everything Everywhere All At Once star Michelle Yeoh has said the Netflix cancellation of The Brothers Sun has left her “heartbroken”.
In an Instagram post, below, Yeoh said it’s “so hard to understand why” The Brothers Sun was cancelled after just one season. Netflix scrapped the show on March 1, less than two months after its eight episode Season 1 debuted on January 4.
“Heartbroken and finding it so hard to understand why,” Yeoh said. “However, I am so very proud of my Brothers Sun family and what we presented to the world. Heads held high.”
The Brothers Sun follows Yeoh as Eileen, the wife of a Taiwanese triad kingpin played by Johnny Kou, who escaped her Los Angeles home after provoking vicious gangsters. Years later an attempt is made on her husband’s life, and Eileen is joined by her sons Charles (played by Justin Chien) and Bruce (played by Sam Li) as they deal with the fallout. While Charles followed in his father’s gangster footsteps, Bruce has grown up completely unaware of the brutal family business.
Chien also posted about the cancellation on Instagram. “Thank you for riding with us on this labour of love. It will take some time to digest this news, but I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your love and support for the show,” he said.
“Thank you for every post, tweet, edit, interaction, etc. It fills me with so much joy knowing that the show resonated with so many people. Your love made all of our collective work, sacrifices, and heartache, worth it.”
IGN’s The Brothers Sun review returned a 4/10. We said: “The Brothers Sun won’t stick to its odd-couple comedy, short-changing some funny familial dynamics in favour of tiresome gangster drama.”
