At Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza, around 30 to 40 babies are born each day in the region’s sole maternity ward. Islam Al-Qanou arrived at the hospital nine months pregnant and completely alone. As she braces for emergency surgery, the mother of nine confronts the harsh reality of bringing a new life into a war zone ravaged by bombing, homelessness and devastation.
